On September 2, 2009 Dr. Lorrence H. Green presented a talk entitled “Anatomy of an Entrepreneur” at the first seminar in the “Nuts and Bolts of Biotechnology Entrepreneurship” series. The seminar series was held at Stony Brook Manhattan in NYC and jointly organized by the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Alumni Committee and NYC BIO.

Dr. Green found a very receptive audience as he used a figure from the game of Operation to describe various parts of the anatomy that are required in the successful entrepreneur. The audience consisted of professionals, academics, students as well as a few budding entrepreneurs. He told this group that:

“While having a head and a heart are important, they aren’t going to do anything for you unless you have the guts to put some skin into the game.”

August 1, 2009

Due to financial cutbacks from the State of New York, biology students at Farmingdale State College were informed that the college could no longer supply them with blank answer forms. These forms, used for tests that are given using the automated grading systems, were now going to have to be supplied by the students, at an added cost.

Westbury Diagnostics, Inc. has had a long relationship with the college, and decided to help. During the past several years, the company’s efforts have allowed over 100 students to attend local prominent scientific meetings, including a recent New York Academy of Sciences meeting on Swine Flu. The company has also had several Farmingdale Bioscience students as interns.

Upon hearing about the situation, Westbury donated a supply of the answer sheets for use in the Bioscience curriculum courses. Many of the students enrolled in the Bioscience Program must work to support their education, and as a Long Island bioscience company Westbury Diagnostics, Inc was happy to be able help lower the costs of their education, even if only slightly. The company looks forward to continuing with similar donations in the future.
